Colorado Gives Day // Tuesday, December 6, 2022

Each year, we celebrate Colorado Gives Day. This annual statewide movement celebrates and increases philanthropy in Colorado through online giving. The $1 Million Incentive Fund created by the CO Gives Day partners is one of the largest giving-day incentive funds in the country. Community First Foundation and FirstBank are presenting Colorado Gives Day this December.

Stock or Securities

Donation of stock is one of the most tax-smart ways to give, allowing you to avoid capital gains tax. Please connect with our fundraising team to obtain detailed instructions on how to make a stock transfer to the Vail Valley Foundation. Please note that it is important to notify the Vail Valley Foundation prior to any stock transfer in order for us to properly identify and acknowledge your gift.

Wire Transfer

To make a donation through a wire transfer, please contact us at 970.777.2015 or connect@vvf.org to obtain the detailed instructions.

Donor-Advised Fund (DAF)

A Donor-Advised Fund (DAF) A donor advised fund, which is like a charitable savings account, gives you the flexibility to recommend how much and how often money is granted to the Vail Valley Foundation and other qualified charities. You can recommend a grant or recurring grants now to make an immediate impact or use your fund as a tool for future charitable gifts.

IRA Charitable Rollover

Are you 70 1/2 years of age or older? If so, the IRA Charitable Rollover is a tax-smart and increasingly popular way of support non-profits. This permanent provision of the tax code allows you to transfer all or a portion of the required minimum distribution (RMD) directly to the Vail Valley Foundation.

A charitable rollover of IRA funds to the Vail Valley Foundation will not count as taxable income in the year you make your gift, which may keep you in a lower tax bracket. Your gift to the Vail Valley Foundation counts toward your RMD. And you save taxes whether you claim the standard deduction or itemize.

Tax Refund

Have you heard about ReFUND CO? A new state tax refund donation program allows you to use some or all of your refund to directly support our work in the community! Consider a donation to Vail Valley Foundation through your Colorado Tax Refund!

When the taxpayer has determined that they will get a Colorado refund, they will use the “Voluntary Contributions” schedule to choose an eligible nonprofit. Taxpayers should look for the new additional option of “Donate to a Colorado Nonprofit Fund”.

Planned Giving

Planned gifts include bequests, charitable gift annuities, life insurance policies, retirement plan assets and IRAs, and other giving vehicles. Click here to learn more.

If a donor is giving to VVF through an entity in which you have already received a tax-deduction, such as a Private Foundation, DAF, Charitable Trust and/or if a portion of your gift is being made through a Matching Gifts Program, there may be restrictions specific to receiving benefits. Please contact your tax-adviser if you have questions regarding your specific situation. The Vail Valley Foundation cannot knowingly facilitate a donor receiving an improper tax deduction or other benefit nor can we knowingly accept a gift that would result in impermissible private inurement or private benefit, an “excess benefit transaction” (as defined in section 4958 of the Internal Revenue Code), or self-dealing (as defined in section 4941 of the Internal Revenue Code).
