DESCRIPTION:<p class="text-lg"><strong>The acclaimed soprano will appear on only two U.S. stages during the winter of 2022 – at The Metropolitan Opera in New York and the Vilar Performing Arts Center! A recital of favorite arias by Bulgarian operatic soprano and pianist Malcolm Martineau.</strong></p> Superstar soprano Sonya Yoncheva has been heralded as one of the most acclaimed and exciting performers of her generation. This evenings program will include: <em>Henri Duparc, </em><em>Pauline Viardot, </em><em>Ernest Amédée Chausson, </em><em>Gaetano Donizetti, </em><em>Léo Delibes, </em><em>Giacomo Puccini, </em><em>Giuseppe Martucci, </em><em>Francesco Paolo Tosti and </em><em>Giuseppe Verdi.</em> <a class="btn btn-red" href="https://vilarpac.org/wp-content/uploads/2021/11/SONYA-Yoncheva-Program.pdf">VIEW THE FULL PROGRAM</a> After studying piano and voice in her hometown Plovdiv with Nelly Koitcheva, she obtained her master’s degree in voice in Geneva, studying with Danielle Borst. Sonya is an alumna of William Christie’s <em>Le Jardin des Voix</em>. She is the winner of <em>Operalia</em> (2010) was honored as Singer of the Year 2021 at the prestigious Opus Klassik awards, as Newcomer of the Year at the 2015 ECHO Klassik Awards as well as with the 2019 Readers’ Award of <em>The International Opera Awards</em>. Career highlights include new productions of <em>Tosca </em>and <em>Otello</em> at the Metropolitan Opera, where she also performed the title roles of <em>Luisa Miller</em>, <em>La traviata </em>and <em>Iolanta</em>, Mimì in<em> La bohème </em>and Gilda in<em> Rigoletto;</em> the title parts of <em>Norma</em> (new production) and<em> La traviata</em>, Marguerite in<em> Faust</em>, Antonia in <em>Les Contes d'Hoffmann and </em>Micaëla in<em> Carmen </em>at the Royal Opera House Covent Garden; <em>Il pirata</em> (new staging) and <em>La bohème </em>(Mimì) at Teatro alla Scala; <em>L'incoronazione di Poppea</em> (new production) at the Salzburg Festival; new stagings of <em>Médée</em> and <em>La traviata</em> at the Staatsoper Berlin; and of <em>Don Carlos,</em> <em>La bohème </em>and <em>Iolanta </em>at the Paris Opéra, where she also appeared in <em>La traviata</em> and <em>Lucia di Lammermoor</em>. She recently sang a recital and a new production of<em> Don Carlos</em> at the Metropolitan Opera, <em>Tosca</em> at the Wiener Staatsoper, Bayerische Staatsoper, Staatsoper Berlin and Opernhaus Zürich, made her role debut as Puccini's Manon Lescaut at Staatsoper Hamburg, performed<em> La bohème</em> at the Staatsoper Berlin,<em> La traviata </em>at the Arena di Verona,<em> La traviata</em> and <em>Siberia </em>at the Maggio Musicale in Florence, <em>Médée </em>at Staatsoper Berlin, <em>La bohème</em> (Mimì) at Covent Garden, <em>Il pirata</em> at the Teatro Real Madrid, <em>Otello</em> in Baden-Baden and Berlin, <em>Iolanta</em> and <em>Otello </em>at the Met; participated in the 2020 season opening gala of the Teatro alla Scala, starred in a<em> Met Stars Live in Concert </em>recital streamed from the Schussenried Monastery, in a Christmas concert hosted by the German President and broadcast on German television, in the Rolex <em>Perpetual Music</em> Gala in Berlin, in the 2020 <em>Concert de Paris </em>as well as in galas and solo concerts in Salzburg, Madrid, Monte-Carlo, Budapest, Mexico City, Verona and Antwerp. Upcoming engagements include her title role debuts in <em>Anna Bolena</em> (Théâtre des Champs-Élysées Paris),<em> La Gioconda</em> and <em>Fedora</em> (Teatro alla Scala), the title parts of <em>Iolanta </em>at Festspielhaus Baden-Baden and of <em>Norma</em> at Gran Teatre del Liceu Barcelona, where she will also appear in a solo concert. At the Teatro Real of Madrid, she will sing in Giordano's <em>Siberia. </em>In the 2022/23 season, she will return to the Metropolitan Opera in the title role of a new staging of <em>Fedora </em>and in the title part of <em>Norma</em>. He has presented his own series at the Wigmore Hall and at the Edinburgh Festival. He has appeared throughout Europe, North America, Australia and at the Aix en Provence, Vienna, Edinburgh, Schubertiade, Munich and Salzburg Festivals. He was given an honorary doctorate at the Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama and appointed International Fellow of Accompaniment in 2009.
