The acclaimed soprano will appear on only two U.S. stages during the winter of 2022 – at The Metropolitan Opera in New York and the Vilar Performing Arts Center! A recital of favorite arias by Bulgarian operatic soprano and pianist Malcolm Martineau.
Superstar soprano Sonya Yoncheva has been heralded as one of the most acclaimed and exciting performers of her generation. This evenings program will include: Henri Duparc, Pauline Viardot, Ernest Amédée Chausson, Gaetano Donizetti, Léo Delibes, Giacomo Puccini, Giuseppe Martucci, Francesco Paolo Tosti and Giuseppe Verdi. VIEW THE FULL PROGRAM After studying piano and voice in her hometown Plovdiv with Nelly Koitcheva, she obtained her master’s degree in voice in Geneva, studying with Danielle Borst. Sonya is an alumna of William Christie’s Le Jardin des Voix. She is the winner of Operalia (2010) was honored as Singer of the Year 2021 at the prestigious Opus Klassik awards, as Newcomer of the Year at the 2015 ECHO Klassik Awards as well as with the 2019 Readers’ Award of The International Opera Awards. Career highlights include new productions of Tosca and Otello at the Metropolitan Opera, where she also performed the title roles of Luisa Miller, La traviata and Iolanta, Mimì in La bohème and Gilda in Rigoletto; the title parts of Norma (new production) and La traviata, Marguerite in Faust, Antonia in Les Contes d'Hoffmann and Micaëla in Carmen at the Royal Opera House Covent Garden; Il pirata (new staging) and La bohème (Mimì) at Teatro alla Scala; L'incoronazione di Poppea (new production) at the Salzburg Festival; new stagings of Médée and La traviata at the Staatsoper Berlin; and of Don Carlos, La bohème and Iolanta at the Paris Opéra, where she also appeared in La traviata and Lucia di Lammermoor. She recently sang a recital and a new production of Don Carlos at the Metropolitan Opera, Tosca at the Wiener Staatsoper, Bayerische Staatsoper, Staatsoper Berlin and Opernhaus Zürich, made her role debut as Puccini's Manon Lescaut at Staatsoper Hamburg, performed La bohème at the Staatsoper Berlin, La traviata at the Arena di Verona, La traviata and Siberia at the Maggio Musicale in Florence, Médée at Staatsoper Berlin, La bohème (Mimì) at Covent Garden, Il pirata at the Teatro Real Madrid, Otello in Baden-Baden and Berlin, Iolanta and Otello at the Met; participated in the 2020 season opening gala of the Teatro alla Scala, starred in a Met Stars Live in Concert recital streamed from the Schussenried Monastery, in a Christmas concert hosted by the German President and broadcast on German television, in the Rolex Perpetual Music Gala in Berlin, in the 2020 Concert de Paris as well as in galas and solo concerts in Salzburg, Madrid, Monte-Carlo, Budapest, Mexico City, Verona and Antwerp. Upcoming engagements include her title role debuts in Anna Bolena (Théâtre des Champs-Élysées Paris), La Gioconda and Fedora (Teatro alla Scala), the title parts of Iolanta at Festspielhaus Baden-Baden and of Norma at Gran Teatre del Liceu Barcelona, where she will also appear in a solo concert. At the Teatro Real of Madrid, she will sing in Giordano's Siberia. In the 2022/23 season, she will return to the Metropolitan Opera in the title role of a new staging of Fedora and in the title part of Norma. He has presented his own series at the Wigmore Hall and at the Edinburgh Festival. He has appeared throughout Europe, North America, Australia and at the Aix en Provence, Vienna, Edinburgh, Schubertiade, Munich and Salzburg Festivals. He was given an honorary doctorate at the Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama and appointed International Fellow of Accompaniment in 2009. Malcolm was the Artistic Director of the 2011 Leeds Lieder+ Festival.
